Chester's Positivity: The Chester Summer Food Program

Written & Photographed by: Kerra Johnson
August 9, 2023

The Chester Summer Food Program aims to give free meals to children in the City of Chester during the summer months. Children ages 4 through 18 (as well as older students who have a disability and are still in school) are welcome to come get a free meal, Monday through Friday and take part in their day camps from 11AM to 3PM. Camp started on July 17, 2023 but doesn't end until August 25, 2023.

The meals provided are state approved and provide the proper amount of vitamins and nutrients for growing young minds. Each meal is served with a carton of milk (Most of the children's favorite being chocolate!)

Some activities at camp include painting, coloring, and other educational and recreational activities provided by the City of Chester.

There are sites on both the East and West sides of Chester. Sites on the Eastside include: Chester Park, McClurg Playground, Sun Village Park, and Washington Park. Sites on the Westside include: Bethany Baptist Church, Memorial Park, and Life in Christ Ministries.

Our Purpose

"The Chester Summer Food Program aims to feed as many children in Chester as possible. We also strive to let children have fun during the summer in a safe environment close to home. As summer comes to an end and the children prepare to go back to school we hope that they have enjoyed their days here in the program and we can't wait to welcome them back next summer!" (Kerra Johnson, Assistant Director of The Chester Summer Food Program)
